A paper on the key properties of carbon black materials for fuel cells and batteries, co-authored by ZBT researcher Adib Caidi, has been awarded the CENIDE Best Paper Award 2024.

ZBT scientists Adib Caidi and Amin S. Amin from the University of Duisburg-Essen were honoured at the CENIDE Best Paper Award 2024<\/strong> in the category \u2018Functional materials for energy applications\u2019 for their publication \u2018Key Control Characteristics of Carbon Black Materials<\/strong> for Fuel Cells and Batteries for a Standardised Characterisation of Surface Properties\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Carbon blacks (CBs) are mainly used in electrocatalysis <\/strong>as carrier materials for nanoparticulate electrocatalysts<\/strong>. The interactions between the CB surface and the catalyst dispersion are complex. The surface properties of the particles affect the electrode layer and influence the performance and service life of fuel cells and batteries. <\/p>\n

In their study, the research group investigated commercially available CBs, focusing on application-relevant key characteristics<\/strong> (KCCs), including electrical conductivity, surface chemistry and particle dispersibility. The proposed KCCs can serve as a starting point for characterising CBs<\/strong> and as a guide for product design in order to obtain meaningful structure-property relationships. <\/p>\n
